Between packing, wrapping gifts, and getting everyone out the door, preparing your home for the holidays can feel like one more thing on an already long to-do list.

But while you're making memories elsewhere, your home could still be using energy as though everyone were there.

The good news? A little preparation can help you avoid unnecessary energy use without compromising your home's comfort or safety. Here's what to do before you leave.

1. Give your thermostat a vacation, too.

One of the easiest ways to save energy while you're away is to adjust your thermostat. After all, there's no reason to heat an empty home to the same temperature you'd enjoy while relaxing on the couch.

With ecobee's Vacation Mode, you can set energy-saving temperatures for your trip without changing your everyday thermostat schedule.

Simply open the ecobee app, select your departure and return dates, and choose your preferred temperatures. Your thermostat will maintain those settings while you're away and automatically return to your regular comfort settings in time for your arrival.

Whether you're visiting family for a long weekend or heading somewhere warm for two weeks, it's one less thing to think about.

Quick tip: In the ecobee app, navigate to Account (top left) > Vacation > Set a vacation to get started.

2. Find the right balance between savings and protection.

Turning down the heat can reduce energy use, but how low should you go?

During colder months, it's important to keep your home warm enough to help prevent frozen pipes, especially if temperatures outside drop below freezing.

When travelling during colder weather, ecobee recommends setting your thermostat to 15.5°C (60°F) to help conserve energy and prevent frozen pipes while you're away. Depending on your home's insulation, plumbing locations, and local climate, a higher temperature may be necessary.

Your heating system matters, too. Homes with heat pumps may benefit from smaller temperature changes rather than large setbacks, which can trigger less efficient backup heating.

And if pets are staying home, be sure to choose a temperature that keeps them comfortable.

The goal isn't to turn your heating off entirely. It's to use less energy while keeping your home protected.

3. Don't forget about the energy you're using elsewhere.

Your thermostat is a great place to start, but it's not the only opportunity to save. Before leaving, take a few minutes to check the rest of your home:

  • Unplug unused electronics. TVs, gaming consoles, and small appliances can continue drawing standby power even when they're switched off.

  • Rethink your holiday lights. Use timers for decorative lighting rather than leaving everything illuminated around the clock.

  • Check your water heater. Some models have an energy-saving vacation setting designed for extended absences. Follow your manufacturer's instructions before making changes.

  • Keep the cold air out. Make sure exterior doors and windows are properly closed, and check for drafts that could make your heating system work harder.

Remember to leave essential devices running, including your refrigerator, internet connection, and any connected home security equipment.

These small changes take very little time and can help reduce wasted energy throughout your trip.

4. Stay connected to home, wherever the holidays take you.

Even with everything prepared, winter weather can be unpredictable.

With the ecobee app, you can check your home's temperature and make adjustments remotely if your plans change or colder weather moves in.

ecobee smart thermostats also offer temperature and HVAC alerts to help you identify potential issues, such as an unexpected temperature drop, while you're away.

For added peace of mind, ecobee Smart Security helps you stay informed about activity at home, while the ecobee Smart Doorbell Camera lets you see who's at your front door, wherever your holiday travels take you. Features like package detection and 30-day video history are also available through ecobee Smart Security subscription plans.

It's a simple way to stay connected to what matters without spending your holiday worrying about what's happening back home.

Make coming home the best part.

After a busy holiday getaway, there's nothing quite like walking through your front door and feeling at home again.

With a few thoughtful adjustments before you leave, you can reduce unnecessary energy use, help protect your home, and return to a comfortable space without having to think twice about your thermostat.

Because the best holiday memories happen when you're focused on the people you're with, not the energy you're using back home.
