ecobee’s mission is to improve everyday life while creating a more sustainable world. This is the first of a series of stories examining how we’re staying true to our principles as we grow.

October marks Energy Awareness Month, a time to promote sustainability and energy efficiency, while encouraging the smart use of electricity, water, and transportation resources. It serves as an important opportunity for businesses to reflect on their current energy consumption and explore new ways to streamline their energy use into more sustainable practices.

Understanding the urgency and severity of the climate crisis remains at the forefront of ecobee’s mission to improve everyday life, while creating a sustainable world, since 2007. We are also proud to be named the 2021 ENERGY STAR® Partner of the Year by the Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy. This award recognizes our continued leadership in planet-positive smart home innovations.

Small changes that make a big impact.

Since launching the first Wi-Fi enabled smart thermostat in 2009, ecobee’s thermostats have delivered more than 20 TWh of cumulative energy savings.1 That’s the equivalent of taking all the homes in Los Angeles off the grid for one year, keeping 14.1 million tons of CO2 out of the atmosphere, or removing 3 million cars from the road for a year.2

“ecobee was founded with the goal of offering simple smart home solutions and creating a more sustainable world,” said ecobee CEO Stuart Lombard. “We’ve made a lot of progress since then, but there’s still plenty of work left to do. As we move forward, we aspire to remove the complexity of running a modern home with smart devices, while helping millions of people live more comfortably and sustainably.”

How can you help?

ecobee SmartOwners can utilize eco+, a suite of smart features that helps improve the home’s energy efficiency. eco+ makes slight temperature adjustments when community electricity demand peaks, which lessens the overall strain on the power grid and increases the consumption of cleaner energy.

For customers who have a utility with time of use rates, eco+ will pre-heat or pre-cool your home when electricity is cleaner and less expensive. During peak demand hours when energy costs more, eco+ automatically adjusts your thermostat settings to help you conserve more energy and save more on your utility bill.

In 2021 alone, ecobee SmartOwners avoided 14.6 million pounds of CO2 by participating in Community Energy Savings (CES) events through eco+.

Community Energy Savings (CES) makes slight temperature adjustments to an owner's thermostat when electricity demand in the community peaks. These adjustments are minor and infrequent, but can have big impacts on the community, allowing the consumption of cleaner energy, and reducing strain on the electricity grid.

In the race against climate change, every action matters, and embedding sustainable values into the smart home will help promote a greener planet. With the right technology in the right hands, everyone can make a difference. Want to learn more? Visit our Sustainability page.
