14 Ways to Maximize Savings with ecobee4
byon January 3, 2018
At ecobee, we’re always focused on making a meaningful impact on our customers’ comfort and convenience. ecobee4 makes it easy for you to monitor and control your heating and cooling anytime, from anywhere, using your smartphone, computer, Apple Watch, and now Siri (with HomeKit-enabled ecobee4).
Although installing an ecobee4 will help you save right out of the box, we want to give you more tools to make sure that you are maximizing your savings. Below, we’ve compiled a list of tips and tricks to help you maximize your savings with ecobee.
1. Program a schedule
Programming a schedule is one of the best ways to save money on heating and cooling.
Learn how to create a schedule and the importance of creating a schedule.
2. Connect ecobee to wi-fi for Weather Impact
The Weather Impact algorithms help your ecobee understand how outdoor temperatures affect your home’s heating and cooling and use this information to learn how efficiently your home maintains temperature. This will allow ecobee to make smarter heating and cooling decisions to prevent your system from running unnecessarily. You can view your Weather Impact data on your Web Portal. 3. Input all of your building information
When setting up your ecobee4 in the web portal, you can input information about your home. Providing the size, age and type of home, as well as the number of people living in the house lets ecobee4 make smarter heating and cooling decisions for you. After all, heating a 600 square foot condo takes different runtime and energy than for a 2,000 square foot home.
4. Mobile app
The mobile app gives you further control and customizability over your comfort and savings. If you forgot to program that you are Away or you have not activated Smart Home/Away, you can quickly make adjustments using the mobile app.
5. Setup Reminders and Alerts, just ask Alexa to do it for you.
You can ask Alexa to set reminders for you to change your filter every month and to regularly get your system serviced. This will help keep your HVAC system running in tip-top shape, making it more energy efficient, and helping you to save more.
6. Enable Smart Home/Away
Smart Home/Away is a feature that uses the remote sensors to override your schedule based on occupancy. If ecobee4 detects motion during a scheduled Away period, it will override your schedule and enable Smart Home to make sure that you are comfortable. Vice versa, if it senses that you are away during a scheduled Home period, it will activate Smart Away to ensure that you are saving money when you are away.
Learn how Smart Home/Away works.
7. Enable Follow Me
Follow Me also uses the occupancy detection capabilities of the remote sensors. When it is enabled, your ecobee4 will use the temperature readings from the sensor that is currently detecting motion to make heating and cooling decisions. It will heat and cool your entire home until your desired temperature is reached in the occupied room. This will ensure that the room(s) you are currently occupying are always the most comfortable. It will make sure there are no sudden changes in temperature or a sudden overload on your system to compensate, helping you save more.
8. Room sensor placement
Make sure that your room sensors are placed in optimal locations. These locations are high traffic areas, approximately 5 feet off the ground, away from windows, vents and direct sunlight, and placed so they have a wide view of the room. This will ensure the temperature readings are accurate and the house temperature is regulated to maximize comfort in the rooms that you spend the most time in. With more accurate temperature readings, your ecobee4 will run your HVAC more effectively, helping you save money.
9. Enable Smart Recovery
As you use your ecobee4, it learns how long it takes for your home to reach your desired temperature, taking into account the performance of your equipment and how the weather affects the regulation of the indoor temperature. This feature is called Smart Recovery.
10. Use only your room sensors for temperature readings
This is appropriate if your thermostat is placed in a sub-optimal location (near windows, in direct sunlight), which would skew the temperature average. Place the sensors in ideal locations for them to get a more accurate temperature reading.
11. Vacation Schedule
The ecobee4 Vacation Schedule helps you to save energy while you are away on your next trip. It will override your current schedule during the time that you have indicated that you will be away, without you needing to change your programmed schedule. Since ecobee4 knows when you are going to arrive back from vacation, it will make sure that your home is comfortable for when you walk in the door and resume its regular schedule.
12. Set your fan’s minimum run time
Setting your fan’s minimum runtime will help distribute the air around the home, creating a more even temperature in the home. You’ll be more comfortable, and with more even temperatures the ecobee4 will not engage your HVAC as often to compensate for hot and cold spots. You’ll be more comfortable at home and save energy while you’re at it.
13. Enabled Access Control
Access Control enables you to create a lock on your thermostat so that only those with the password can make changes to the temperature and other comfort settings. This will help prevent your system running unnecessarily to make up for constant changes, or your kids making the temperature too high (in the winter) and low (in the summer).
14. Use IFTTT to receive alerts
You can incorporate IFTTT with your ecobee4 and have it send you an alert whenever someone makes a change to the temperature. This is ideal when you’re managing the comfort of multiple people in the home but still want to an oversight on any changes made to the thermostat.
