Feature Friday: Power Extender Kit (PEK)
byon October 2, 2015
ecobee3 is compatible with most residential heating and cooling (HVAC) systems in North America. Even so, we want to make sure that you purchase your ecobee3 with complete confidence by using our easy-to-use Compatibility Checker before you complete your purchase.
One thing that makes ecobee more reliable than the competition is that ecobee thermostats are powered using 24VAC supplied by the “Common” or the C-wire.
Some HVAC configurations do not have the C-wire, and in some cases the C-wire is simply not run from the furnace to the thermostat location. Rather than limit the number of people that can benefit from the savings and comfort delivered by the ecobee3, we created the Power Extender Kit (PEK) to provide a reliable source of power to all users. If you do not have a C-wire but have a standard 4-wire configuration at your thermostat and on your HVAC, you can use the PEK in lieu of the C-wire.
Note: If you do have a C-wire, then you do not need the PEK. You can keep this in your home in case you ever find the need for it.
