Patrick – I am someone who became “hooked” on energy savings after installing a home solar array. Once I became more invested in the solar array, I wanted to more ways to maximize the energy I generated myself. The solar inverters I installed have a feature to communicate with a smart thermostat, and I started to investigate these devices. In the end, I opted for the ecobee Smart Si even without integration to the solar inverter; the feature set impressed me, especially considering the price.
I’m heavily invested in the Apple ecosystem and became enamored with ecobee‘s next generation ability to integrate with Apple’s HomeKit. When I needed to replace my Smart Si, I didn’t even give it a second thought as to which thermostat I would get.
Before I installed my ecobee, I had a battery operated “programmable” thermostat, which was essentially an expensive digital timer – its functionality was quite limited. It didn’t have the smart features like that ecobee3 that can learn recovery times based on outdoor temperatures. I had to fiddle with the schedule quite a lot so that I could wake up to a comfortable temperature. I had to make these adjustments often throughout the year. And in less than two years it died during a snowstorm, and I had to scramble to find a replacement thermostat before I froze. After this incident, I wanted a more reliable and smart thermostat, so I don’t have to re-experience what happened in the winter.
Steve Jenkins‘ review made a huge impression on me. Having online advice and experiencing the helpful folks on the ecobee support line during my pre-sale investigation sealed the deal. Everything about my experience has been so positive with ecobee; I didn’t hesitate to go ecobee again.
