The following is a guest blog written by active ecobee community member Joe Tsik. Let us know if you would like to write for the ecobee.com blog!
Since the late 70’s, I’ve been playing with “Home Automation.” It started with homemade Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems and then with the X-10. It worked, and with the advent of PC’s the functionality improved. The Home Automation industry didn’t move into the modern era until the proliferation of wi-fi and mobile phones. It gave you complete control with the benefit of mobility, control anything from anywhere at any time. Sophisticated programming and intelligent software became the next phase that freed us from constant monitoring. With SMS and email, you are immediately alerted to any changes in the parameters you desire.
For example, if the temperature in your home increases too quickly, or someone tries to unlock your smart lock you can receive a notification and be aware of how different components of your smart home are functioning. The distinct advantage that the ecobee3 provides is the fact it doesn’t need to be connected to any third party automation system. The best part is that I spent 10 minutes setting it up, and now I don’t need to worry about it anymore.
There are currently many home automation devices in the market and new ones arriving every day. The convenience of being able to open an app and have insight into how different parts of your home are functioning add a level of peace of mind and convenience in your life. Instead of worrying about the small things, these devices have got your back. If you need to make any changes, you can access and control the devices from anywhere at any time. They just need to connect to your wi-fi, download the mobile app, and you can access them remotely. It’s that easy.
