Bee-hind the Scenes: Taso Perdikoulias

by on July 2, 2015

The following is a story from ecobee employee Taso Perdikoulias. Learn more about life at ecobee!

Taso – As ecobee’s Director of Mobile and Web, I manage both the Mobile and Web teams. I was brought on to add structure to the development process, and to ensure that my teams are working as efficiently as possible.

Previously, I’ve developed apps for Disney and Tim Hortons, as well as Glu mobile (the developer responsible for the Kim Kardashian game). I hold a Bachelors Degree in Math and a Masters of Engineering, both from McMaster University.

ecobee has been a great career move for me, in terms of my position, the work I do, and the teams I get to work with. I was looking for something with more responsibility, so a director role seemed fitting. I was drawn to ecobee because I think the energy savings and smart home technology space is interesting. The people at ecobee are great – everyone is nice and intelligent.

There are so many applications within the Internet of Things that it will be interesting to see how this space develops, especially how connected technologies integrate with wearables such as Apple Watch and Android Wear.

To be a good eco-peep, people in general need to be open minded to change. Understand the culture of trying to make a difference for the environment and our planet, and be able to challenge yourself and continue to grow in your role.

The people are what make the company, and the people at ecobee are great. A general rule of thumb that I’ve noticed is that you can have the best product on the market, but if the office environment and people aren’t great then it won’t be a pleasant work environment. ecobee has the best product and people.

My favorite part of my job is working with and learning about the new technologies, I love meeting with the team and collaborating with the team. Since starting at ecobee I’ve experienced significant personal growth and have had the opportunity to increase my skill levels.

When I’m not at work, I play hockey on a men’s league. I love movies and spending time with my kids at their events (soccer, baseball, swimming). All my free-time is spent with my kids.

My passions include video games. I teach a course at Humber College in mobile game development. I’m always interested in learning about the new technologies, I think I really love the space of the smart home. It’s a really cool and interesting area to be in. I think it’s going to explode in the next few years – we’re just scratching the surface now.
