Bee-hind the Scenes: Casey McKinnon
byon July 17, 2015
The following is a story from ecobee employee Casey McKinnon. Learn more about life at ecobee!
I’m the VP of Product, so my role ties in with every department, which I am very excited about. I’m excited to come in to work every single day. I consider every day an opportunity to build on the next, so I feel like I am constantly living my career highlight.
I love coming to work because I get to understand people and what they are trying to accomplish. Observing how people solve their problems today and figuring out how we can do better together in the future.
I have a diverse education. I received a Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies from Carleton University. I essentially took Commerce courses with diverse areas of study. For example, I complemented my business courses with philosophy, music and art history. I also studied Human-Computer Interaction at the University of Washington, and Design at both OCAD and the Seattle School of Visual Concepts.
Before joining ecobee, I worked at Freshbooks. I started when there were about 30 people at the company, and helped grow the company to over 200 employees. I went through a rapid growth phase with Freshbooks. My team started as a team of one (me), and when I left it was a team of forty-five. I enjoy working on smaller teams and being able to work with the product and the customers to deliver the best user experience. I have this opportunity with ecobee.
I wanted to join ecobee because the product is very interesting to me. I think that working on a connected device would be a great experience. I also like to think that I am a customer – I’m a homeowner with a thermostat, and think that using home automation technology is a great way to solve a lot of common problems that homeowners see.
I’ve noticed that the people here work incredibly hard – everyone, without exception. They are focused and great a problem solving. eco-peeps are incredibly intelligent people. I knew during my interview that this company and product have great potential. Since being here, I’ve been able to confirm this, except that I’ve noticed that the potential is even deeper than I initially thought. I love working with such a dynamic group of people.
I’m truly interested in every aspect of home automation. I feel like anything that can help you understand what is going on in the home is important. These little things that you would otherwise worry or think about throughout the day can be answered simply by opening an app. For example, light switches and door locks help you determine whether you left the door unlocked or forgot to turn off a light.
I think technology such as ecobee thermostats should work to simplify your life. There’s so much going on in a day, and if people can worry about one less thing, whatever it may be, if it’s important to you and can be addressed, it would be great. People need to understand these technologies’ ability to solve real problems. It should help everyday people solve everyday problems. ecobee accomplishes this.
