Feature Friday: Follow Me, and Smart Home/Away

ecobee3 is the only smart thermostat that uses wireless remote sensors to keep you comfortable and help you maximize savings. They do this through a combination of two smart features: Follow Me and Smart Home/Away.

Follow Me

The Follow Me feature uses your ecobee3 and wireless remote sensors to ensure that the rooms that are currently occupied are the most comfortable. 

Follow me uses a weighted average of all sensors you’ve selected to participate in a Comfort Setting (learn more about Sensor Participation).When a sensor detects motion, your ecobee3 will gradually incorporate the data from this sensor into your home’s calculated temperature average (used to heat or cool your home). Similarly, when a sensor stops detecting motion, the data from this sensor will gradually be removed from the calculated temperature average.

To enable Follow Me, on your thermostat select Main Menu > Sensors > Follow Me > Enable or DisableYou can select which sensors you want to participate in Follow Me by navigating to the Main Menu > Sensors > Follow Me.

You can see the measured temperature and occupancy status from each wireless remote sensor in the mobile app, on the thermostat, and in your ecobee web portal account. To view the temperature and occupancy status for each wireless remote sensor in the mobile app and on the thermostat, tap Menu > Sensors. To view this on the Web Portal, login to your Web Portal and select the Sensors tile.

By clicking “Follow Me” from System Monitor in Home IQ, you will be able to see the temperature and occupancy measured by each wireless remote sensor paired with your ecobee3 and how it changes during the course of the day. You will also be able to see the calculated average temperature across all wireless remote sensors that are currently detecting occupancy (and that are being used to make heating and cooling decisions).

In the example below, the homeowner is in the Living Room at 8:45 PM, so ecobee3 will use the temperature of this sensor to heat and cool the home.

Smart Home/Away

When Smart Home/Away is enabled, your ecobee3 and remote sensors will use occupancy detection capabilities to override your schedule if you come home during a scheduled Away period, or if you are away during a scheduled Home period. This means that if you or your family members trigger the motion sensor when you are scheduled to be Away, your ecobee3 will run your system to make your home more comfortable. Alternatively, if no sensors detect any motion even though you are scheduled to be home, your ecobee3 will create a setback to help you save money. 

During a Sleep schedule, Smart Home/Away is not active. ecobee3 will rely on the average temperature from all the sensors in your home or use the temperature from the sensors you have selected for the Sleep comfort setting.

To configure Smart Home/Away navigate to the Main Menu > Sensors > Smart Home/Away > Enable or Disable.

Below you will see an example of Home IQ with Smart Home/Away enabled. This homeowner has come home before their scheduled Home period, so ecobee3 started adjusting the temperature in the home to ensure they are comfortable.

Under the Follow Me tab on Home IQ you can see that the wireless remote sensors have detected occupancy, so Smart Home was activated. Since there is activity in all four locations with sensors, ecobee3 is using a temperature average to ensure that all four rooms are as comfortable as possible. Before the Sleep Comfort Setting, ecobee3 detected no motion despite it being a Home period, so it went into Smart Away to help conserve energy before returning to Sleep.

Below, you can see that the homeowner was scheduled to arrive at 4 PM, but after ecobee had not detected any motion, Smart Away was activated to maximize savings at 6 PM, until the homeowner arrived home at 7 PM.
