Feature Friday: Easy to set up and use

by on July 25, 2014

One of the many major improvements we brought to ecobee3 is the guided setup process. Once your ecobee3 is installed and powered up, it will guide you through the setup process and make sure everything is connected and working properly.

First, your ecobee3 will automatically detect wires connected to the terminals. It will then help you confirm any accessories that you may have connected (or that you would like to connect). Next, your ecobee3 will ask you to set your preferences. You can choose to have your temperature displayed in either Celsius or Fahrenheit, set your thermostat to heating or cooling (or auto), and name your new thermostat.

Connect your ecobee3 to your home wi-fi network and register your thermostat on with the 4-digit code provided by your thermostat. This will allow you to remotely access your thermostat via the mobile app and the ecobee Web Portal. This will also give you access to Home IQ reports in the web portal.

Home IQ provides a free monthly report, making it easy to track your heating and cooling usage, estimated energy savings, and more.

Use the icon reference guide below to understand all the icons on your thermostat and mobile app.

Once your thermostat is set up, you can pair wireless remote sensors with it. Ordinary thermostats only read the temperature in one location. ecobee3 uses multiple temperature readings from remote sensors to deliver comfort more reliably and in the rooms you’re actually using. You can pair up to 32 wireless remote sensors to one ecobee3. The more wireless remote sensors you use, the more comfortable you will be and the more you can save.

Stand in front of your thermostat and pull the plastic tab on the remote sensor to automatically pair it.

Here is more information on the sensors, including placement and use. You can also read our blog post on the ecobee3 wireless remote sensors for additional information.

Let’s take a look at the great features of the wireless remote sensors.

Smart Home and Smart Away:

If ecobee3 and remote sensors senses that you are home during your scheduled Away period, or away during your scheduled Home period, it will automatically override your schedule to maximize comfort and savings. Be sure to place your sensors in high-traffic areas if you enable the Smart Home and Smart Away feature. If your schedule changes and you want to update your ecobee3 schedule, simply select the menu button, select schedule and adjust your schedule.

Follow Me

You can maximize your comfort by taking a temperature average of your wireless remote sensors. This will help to even out the temperature throughout your home. You can also use the Follow Me feature. This means that the sensors that are placed throughout your home will detect motion and use the temperature reading in occupied rooms to heat or cool your home so that the rooms you are currently in are the most comfortable.

Make sure to place the remote sensors at about 5 feet off the ground for the most accurate temperature reading. You can mount them on a wall or use the stand to place them on a shelf. Avoid placing them in areas with direct sunlight

Switch between heat and cool settings so that you’re always comfortable in your home. You can do this by pressing the Menu button, then select System, then HVAC to switch between heat and cool. For more air circulation, turn your fan on from the quick changes menu.
